On October 2, Shine’s board of directors were invited to the APS board meeting to receive recognition for being a key to student success in the district. We have been so honored to create our organization and do our work alongside APS administration. Together, we have a goal to create church-school partnerships in every Title 1 School in the district.

Over the last 3 years, their support and collaboration has been a key factor in building 19 successful partnerships.

Here is what the administration had to say about Shine as they presented our work to the school board:

“Through a formal MOU and support from the Coordinated School Health Department, Shine seeks to bring together the mission and needs of a school with the mission and resources of a church to increase the common good for our community.

It is important to note that a Shine Partnership is not a proselytizing program. However, what they are is AMAZING!

Churches are uniquely resourced and motivated to serve their community. Shine seeks to connect the resources of a church or religious organization with a school. Shine and APS work with the school to perform a volunteer needs assessment based upon the school’s specific needs, then a Shine church partner is selectively chosen and trained in Shine's model before partnering with a school.

What began as a pilot program at Mission Ave Elementary in 2015 has expanded to middle schools, and recently expanded to high schools with the newest partnership between Manzano High School and two churches. There are now 18 current partnerships.

Marvin Procter and Easton Garcia, Shine Board volunteers, and Lisa Fuller, director were able to join us this evening to represent the many, many Shine volunteers in our schools. Thank you for all the ways you partner with APS staff, schools, families and students.”
